NEW YORK (AP) The NHL has awarded $30.3 million in research grants and $2.6 million in funding for the development of drugs to fight malaria, including $1 million for the new Global Anti-Malaria Initiative.
The program, announced Friday, will help fund research to develop anti-malaria agents, including the first drugs developed in a U.S. lab.
The league said it will also provide grants to the World Bank, U.N. Children’s Fund, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.K. Department for International Development.
The World Health Organization estimated last year that malaria kills more than 7 million people in the world every year.
